Brisbane-based firm Viagra has launched a new, cheaper alternative to the first, more effective, generic version of the popular erectile dysfunction drug, which is available at prices from $2 to $6 per pill. The new treatment is to be priced at $0.70 per pill.
The company behind Viagra said the price is only available for those who have been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction, such as men with diabetes and those on a low dose of 50mg of sildenafil.
It says the new treatment, available in Australia and the U. S. as the brand name of Viagra, should cost the same as the original one, with a lower co-payment of $1.50 per tablet.
The company's patent for Viagra, which expires in 2020, will run until April 2018. Its generic version, called sildenafil, will be priced at about $0.70 per tablet.
“Our focus on cost-saving is clear and has been driving innovation,” says Andrew Jackson, vice-president, global business development, Viagra.
“We’re in a competitive market, which has been a key driver of innovation for years,” said Pfizer’s CEO, global product manager, Mark Esper. “But cost-conscious consumers and patients are also asking for a cheaper, generic version of Viagra.”
He added that “the new generic Viagra doesn’t seem to have the same side-effect profile as the original.”
However, he said the cheaper sildenafil could be worth it for those who need more effective treatment. “It provides a more affordable option for those who are looking to save money.”
It is available for daily use in Australia and the U. from 9.25 per cent. Viagra's price has been rising steadily in recent years, with prices starting to reach $1.50 a pill.
However, it remains to be seen whether the cheaper sildenafil will be equally effective or if it’ll be available as a generic version. In the meantime, the company is working on a partnership to make the new treatment generic, which means it can start selling the version in the United States in the fall of 2017.
“The generic version of the Viagra will become available in a shorter period of time, and we’re hoping to get that in the next few years,” said Jack Johnson, Viagra’s chief executive officer.
“We’ve been trying to develop a product that can work across multiple avenues to get people to take the drug. But it’s a long process and it’s going to take some time.”
Sildenafil, the brand name for sildenafil, is used to treat erectile dysfunction, a condition in which men have difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection. Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra.In Australia, the drug can cost between $0.60 and $2.70 per pill. Sildenafil will cost between $0.70 and $1.50 per pill, depending on the dosage and the pharmacy.

The company says it’s already looking at testing its generic version, which is available from the brand name and other brand names. “We’ve been looking at trying to determine whether the generic is the best fit for the individual,” said Jackson.A generic version of the Viagra is also expected to be available by the end of 2017, when the drug’s patent expires. It’s expected to cost between $0.70 and $1 per tablet.If the new price is found to be too high, it’s unlikely to be effective. “If the pricing is too high, it could lead to higher costs for consumers, as well as competition in the market,” said James Watson, co-founder and managing director, Watson Research. “We’re also trying to keep things consistent.”
